Since the opinions are just rolling in on my question about fly line (NOT!!!), I figured I'd put up another question to you folks.

Say one was able to get a really nice fly rod ($300+ range)...what to get? I'm not asking brand or anything like that, I'm wondering about size. I have a 3 wt that is pretty good, and a 6 wt that is ok. The 6 wt is a TFO that is pretty heavy to me. I know waving it around for an hour or 2 and I'm tired of it. The 3 wt is fine and I really don't see any issues with it. It might be a bit long for some of the smaller creeks, but I think I can get over that.

What I'm thinking is that an expensive rod would be better to have in a 6 wt, since the rod would be much lighter than my current one and I'd notice the difference more. Seems like maybe an expensive rod in the 3 wt might be a waste since I'm usually not casting long distances with that one.

So...what say ye? Should I keep the heavy 6 wt and just get a nice 5 wt???

I would probably go with a 5wt. You could always learn to build rods, and build one of each... Wink

I've given rod building some thought, but I've got projects coming out of the yinyang. Building rods would be way down the list.

Thanks for the opinon on the 5wt. I'm leaning that way myself.

A 9' 5 wt. would be hard to beat...They're down to about three ounces these days...

Anything you cast is going to seem awesome. Your rods are what? 10 years old almost? (not that there's anything wrong with that.)

If you want to go all "off brand" get a deal type thing, I didnt' cast it but that Rise fly rod they sent me to give away was really, really sweet. "level" series. comes with an extra tip section, too.

Now, what does it cast like? no idea. Wink

I've got 5 rods in various 2-piece. 3 piece. and 4 piece styles. I really haven't noticed a difference in performance and except for traveling with them I really don't have a problem with any of the styles.. If i had to re buy all my rods I think I'd buy 2 piece or 4 peice so I could use a tube that incorporated the reel into it so you don't have to break the rod all the way down. It would be nice to have my rods rigged from the night before when I arrive at the water. Anyway you can do it with multi sections its just easier when you use a 2 or 4 peice and break it down in 1/2 and use a 2 piece tube with the expanded reel end so you don't have to break the reel off the rod.

Thanks for the input Zug. I wasn't sure if there was a performance difference or not. Seems like a 4 piece would be great if you ever needed to travel. I guess it might take up less room in the closet too Very Happy .
