Unnamed and "really" unnamed... Empty Unnamed and "really" unnamed...

Post by Owl Mon Apr 04, 2011 1:08 am

I was checking out a topo map the other night while looking for some distances and elevations for an upcoming trip and as I scrolled across the map towards the creek I was wanting to look at, I remembered (for the 100th time) seeing in person a little creek that is well hidden where it joins a bigger creek. Over the years I've gotten glimpses of it through the woods in early spring but never made the effort to fish it. Like almost all the other creeks in the area, I figure dit was a vertical ascent and alot of work. well, holy-moly! Looking at it on the topo map as I scrolled across it, it appears to be flatter and less of a gradient than the one I was checking out! It's rare that we get really small streams here that aren't really vertical, with the mountain walls going almost straight up from the creek-bed. But this thing, although it may be covered with a canopy of trees - looks to be about as flat as any creek I've seen in GA - maps or in person. So I've got to check it out....

Oh and the coolest thing....it's un-named on every topo map I've found. Un-named, difficult access and plenty of other killer water around!? Could be the chance to catch that elusive 12 inch GA brook trout I've always wanted to see.

So has anyone else ever found a "no-name" creek that had great fishing? ( Please say yes! Please say yes! Smile LOL )

I once found an unnamed creek that had terrible fishing....and then I later found out it had a name.

True story, it's name is "Dry Run Creek."

I wish I had known that before fishing it.

I noticed the 'do not name small streams' rule. Does this mean don't give it a moniker like Fred or Wilma, or don't give away the name of a stream loaded with 12" brookies? Just askin'

Hmmm...that's a good question. I think Wilma is out, but Fred is ok.

If you're in the SouthEast, you don't name streams that have 9 inch brookies. So yes, that's what it means. Please don't put the names of small streams on the interwebz on this site. Unless you call them Fred. I guess. Smile

I don't care if it's the SE or not, if I find a treasure chest of unfestered water I'll take it to my grave. Love the site, man. Glad to be on board.

I hear ya BK! Thanks for signing on. I see you're pretty close to the Hi. I used to fish it some until TN went nuts with the out-of-state licenses.

Yep. $41 dollar non resident w/out trout, $81 with trout. Being in the corner we fish AL and TN for our bass club. AL is another $41.

The Hiwassee is where we always went. Buddy had a Hyde drifter and it made for some great trips. Went to school at NGC so all the water there was trouty. One of your videos looked like the drive toward Suches on Dicks & Waters Creek. Made the ol' grape start to meander back in time.

Un-named streams are the best. Named ones are best not shared on the net. Like the rule Owl, but that's going back several boards.

Labrador, I can't say that I'm followin' you? It's the same rule I've always had - you don't name really small streams. Maybe you misunderstood what I was saying - or I'm misunderstanding you....something....I dunno.... sorry!?

BK - that road part was shot just past the "rock pile" where GA 60 goes straight, toward Suches. The second clip was Doublehead Gap Rd. I can't remember how many times I've been up that road, but I do know one thing - it never seems shorter! Smile

Oh no, that's what I was saying. That we don't name the smalls. But for me If I was fishing the Hooch DH, the Nant DH, I wouldn't mind saying. If it was "ladder creek" I probably wouldn't (even though many would know from pics-but if they already know then who cares). I just don't like "hot-spotting" any water online.

Post by Floggin Water Wed Apr 06, 2011 5:48 pm

I've fished many a small (and I mean, I could straddle the creek in many places) streams that held fish. I found out later that each had a name - but not a widely known name.

My favorite waters are small streams, loaded with small cutthroat and rainbow trout. We don't have a lot of brookies around here, but there are a couple streams within an hour and a half or two hour drive of here that have some brookies.

I don't name small streams as a rule, or I give them false names like "Lost Creek" or "Mountain Creek" or something.

I did find a little stream once though - that I couldn't find on maps, it was hard to see on the satellite photos, and I've never been able to dig up a name for it. It held wild little rainbows - who knows how they got there, but I was glad they were Smile

We've come up with some good ones over the years, but "ladder" creek was probably the most infamous.

Ladder creek sounds like a steep one.

Owl - the rock pile says it all. do you toss one on the pile when you go? We always did. Dicks was the first place I ever went trout fishing. Couldn't believe I was catching 7" trout in 3" of water under cut banks. Though it was a all spinning outfits then.

Ladder isn't that steep of a creek and it's pretty well know for "wild water." I think it get's a little too much publicity online though as you used to go on a weekday and had the place to yourself. Now you climb a rock and find the most horrid site....a wet boot print.

I bet you probably fished ladder before.

BK, I don't. Maybe that's what's wrong with me lately! I need to get a great big one and toss it on there! Hard to find a place to park there now, since they've "no parking" -d the whole side of the road. I've fished Dick's a few times and used to fish Water's some back when it was good ( around 1990 or so). You had to check in and out back then. Now I hear you just "sign in." Bet there's no poahing going on there. pfft.

Lab can I ask if you guys have fished the creek I'm talking about? It's not ....umm...on the lower end.. I know that one.....on the map this one is just a little ways downstream from three forks at L creek. For all I know it might be 2 ft wide and a wall of rhodo's. . ..

Last time I fished Dick's it was in '90. I only saw someone up there one time. Sounds like things have changed. Waters - never went in there, but a frat brother of mine was local and did a few times. You had to make an appointment to fish it. Your stuff was inspected to make sure you had nothing above #6 hook, all was barbless, etc. He caught a 9# brown. Let me guess, now it's all covered in Budweiser and niblets cans, cigarette butts, honey bun wrappers, and broken styrofoam coolers.

Nah, that'd be a good guess but the fish aren't nearly as big. It's not as estensively managed as it was and the with the new DH waters we have( where there are some big fat fish to be caught) and Dukes special reg section( big fish, appt. - it's kinda the "new" Waters...) the fever over Waters kinda died down to almost nothing. The regs are still the same I think but there's very little "chatter" about it these days.
But that description you gave? Sounds just like Rock creek and on a busy weekend, Coopers, too. Evil or Very Mad

Owl, I've only fished the main attraction up there. I used to go a couple times a month, but haven't been in over a year because it's too much traffic on the main water. I should try it again, but it's a long drive up a forest service road, just to find it covered up with fisherman. It probably is fishing great with this warmer weather. I wouldn't mind to fish some of the other water up there, just haven't done it. I know UB, and those guys have probably fished everything up there though.

Oh gotcha Lab. I thought you were in on some of those small stream excursions. Maybe UB will find his way over and I can ask him about it. I think you're right, I bet they've found and fished it already if it's big enough to fish.

I've fished a lot of really, really small cricks, but so far they've all had names. The map I use is pretty detailed. Even the tiniest little trickles have a name. There is a couple that look pretty good though. Just haven't fished em yet. So much water, so little time...
