Czech style nymphing vs. "regular"?

Post by Floggin Water on Tue May 10, 2011 11:49 pm

I've heard the term, and seen some specialized leaders for it - but really how does Czech style nymphing differ from "regular" tight line nymphing?

Depends on what you consider "regular" nymphing. I assume you're talking about high sticking.

When high sticking you generally tie your dropper off the bend of the first fly. You usually use multiple splitshot. During the drift you hold the rod tip high (hence the name, high sticking).

With Czech nymphing the droppers are generally tied off of the leader ("drop shot" style, with the biggest fly at the "point", or bottom, to get the rig deep). The flies are tied very heavy, and with a very slim profile. Because of this they sink very fast. You usually do not use split shot with a Czech nymphing rig. During the drift you hold your rod as close to the water as possible.

That pretty much covers the "basic" differences. Here is an article on Czech nymphing that goes much more in-depth than I can.

To add to what bannen said if the fish are not actively feeding (winter) the "point" fly goes up top which drags the whole team of bugs to the bottom where the fish are...
