Oo First Post, First topic in here...

Post by Floggin Water on Sun Apr 03, 2011 5:55 am

I guess I get first post in the warm water section - so I'm going to ask the typical first question for such thing - what's your favorite warm water fish to fish for?

I'm going to say I'm tied between bluegill, and pumpkinseed. Gillies get bigger, generally, but punkinseeds are prettier! Neither grow terribly big around these parts, generally - but they're super fun on my light rod anyway. cheers

Nice place you've got here, Owl.

Hmmm...isn't a pumpkinseed something that I scoop out of the pumpkin at Halloween??? Ok...ok...kind of a sunfish with spines...right? geek

Definitely carp, with stripers a close second.

Alright, someone has got to acquaint Mrs. Damsel with some bluegills and bass. I think I know a guy. I'll ask him.

A pumpkinseed is a sunfish, but it's got distinct coloration. Here's one now:

I'll take a largemouth bass I guess as #1, although I do like to fish poppers for bream, too. ( RD, that's generic for "sunfish" and is pronounced "brim" Wink )

PS - thanks Mark. At some point (just FYI) the ads will go away, too. Just have to save up some $$ to make that happen.

These guys are my faves. I'm told they're Mayan Cichlids, but can't confirm.
I just know they haunt the canals behind the in-laws house in FL, and fight like SOBs.

Wasn't that your girl's first fish? That was a good post...

Of course I have to say largemouth bass. But if the wind is calm and the water clear, I love to see 'gills move on tiny poppers. That's about as exciting as it gets.

Warm water... Since we catch bluegills aka sunnies by the thousands and Bass are a given, I'm going to say my fav. is the Channel Cat. These hawgs eat nasty stuff and when they get big they are lots of fun!

I'm pretty partial to the bream on a fly rod myself. I do enjoy catching the bass though.

I'd love to hook into a carp one day, but there's just so many days in the year.

We need to hit Marben and see how the bream population is doing this year. I bet things are in full-swing down there now!

Nobody has mentioned a Smallmouth Bass?
C'mon folks... that's the finest "warmwater" species that swims.
I actually think of them as "coolwater" because they inhabit a lot of the lower stretches of trout streams where I've fished, and you really aren't likely to catch one in a farm pond... but of course they get thrown in the "warmwater" group by most fly fishers... although I definitely think they stand alone.

Never caught a smallie, but I hear they are awesome.

Owl, I'll have 2 kids in tow as well, so don't expect much fishing out of me. Should be very entertaining though.

Can't argue that Jay. Smallies are definitely up there. A notch or two below the carp in my humble, and accurate, opinion, but definitely high on the list.

It was Clif. Good memory. If I was giving away a Rise Fly Rod, you would have just won it!
